Any document combining text and graphics is desktop
published.
Desktop publishing (DTP) is a term that means many
things to many people. To some, DTP means the
production of brochures, newsletters, and other
business-oriented publications. I prefer a broader
definition: any document that combines text and
graphics is desktop published. I consider my own
business letters to be desktop published. Why? Each
letter includes a photograph of myself that was
manipulated in Adobe Photoshop and a logo that was
also created in Photoshop. All the letterhead's
design elements are combined with Adobe PageMaker
6.5 then printed on a photo-quality ink-jet printer.
Desktop publishers may use heavyweight DTP programs like PageMaker or
QuarkXPress, but you can also use word processing programs to create desktop
publications. My wife, for example, produces her company's newsletter with
Microsoft Word 7.0.
In this month's column, I will introduce you to products that can make desktop
publishing easier and more fun. Most of the software covered this month are
plug-ins or adjunct software that require a host program to work. The system
requirements for these products are the same as for the original program. In
other words, if you are already using the host program, you have the proper
system requirements for using the plug in or add on.
Nobody makes more graphics add-ons and plug-ins than Extensis. So it's no
surprise that they have a product that makes using Adobe PageMaker easier.
PageTools 2.0 is a package of plug-ins designed to be compatible with PageMaker
5.0, 6.0 and 6.5. The central component of PageTools is PageBars, which are
multiple toolbars that the user can customize with buttons that can be assigned
to any PageMaker function. Other plug-ins include tools for navigating, scaling
multiple objects, counting words and characters, printing nonconsecutive page
ranges, and automatically applying guides to objects. Some of the plug-ins that
are new in version 2.0 include PageType, which can be used for creating and
applying character styles; PageGlossary, for inserting frequently used
(formatted or unformatted) text; and PageTabs, for applying tab settings to
selected paragraphs without affecting paragraph style. Other useful plug-ins
include PageMarks, for drawing crop marks and registration marks anyplace on
your page; PageCaps, for changing the case of selected text; and PageScaler, for
scaling multiple objects by percentages.
