Cost variables take into account many factors
Comparing costs of the two architectures mentioned in
this article is a messy task. From setup to maintenance,
there are balances and variables that make any estimate
fairly arbitrary. It is possible, however, to draw a few
generalizations.
Beginning at hardware levels, even a high-powered Pentium
server at around $10,000 is a pittance compared to the
$100,000 (and up) tag attached to high-end SunSPARCs and
other powerful UNIX boxes.
Windows NT Server Enterprise Edition, at about $4,000,
obviously costs much more than the free Linux. But even if
you have to shell out for the 50-user license, you come out
ahead. Furthermore, the salary of a qualified Linux
administrator is likely to be higher than a comparably
qualified Microsoft administrator. Still, support for Linux
is almost invariably free, while Microsoft support,
depending on the quantity and quality you need, can climb
into hundreds and possibly thousands of dollars.
Like Linux, Apache is open-source, free and widely
supported. IIS for NT is also free, included with option
packs for NT Server. Server administrator salaries are
comparable, although you might encounter hidden setup costs
from inexperienced administrators trying to wend their way
through the vast Linux command set.
Development tools are a different story. ASP is included
free with IIS, but ColdFusion Enterprise version costs about
$4,000 (barring special promotions). ColdFusion programmers
are more scarce than ASP programmers, which can make finding
a qualified one an expensive and time-consuming task. On the
other hand, ColdFusion development time is up to 50 percent
less than for comparable ASP applications.
In the short run, the Microsoft architecture wins by a
mile. Unfortunately, if you plan to be around for a while,
setup costs are only the first line in a long list of
considerations. Cumulative development and maintenance costs
will ultimately level the playing field, especially if you
factor in the cost of downtime— lost customers.
Your bottom line will suffer less from that SunSPARC
shell-out than from the following hidden costs of a less
stable platform:
• Your ability to update and launch your site on
schedule;
• Your architecture’s ability to scale to meet the site’s
growth demands;
• Your application’s capacity to attain site performance
goals;
• Your system’s ability to complete all requested
transactions;
• Your site’s fulfillment of user performance
expectations; and
• The number of sales foiled by your ecommerce system Any
of these issues can mean thousands of dollars per day, hour
or minute. |
